IMB NI helps monitor the quality of life in prison, by working to ensure fairness and accountability in prison.

What is the IMB?

The IMB is an independent statutory body whose role is to monitor the treatment of prisoners and the conditions of their imprisonment at the three prison establishments: Maghaberry, Magilligan, and Hydebank Wood College and Women’s Prison.

Independent Monitoring Boards are made up of unpaid volunteers operating in every prison in Northern Ireland.

IMB members are the eyes and ears of the public, appointed by the Minister of Justice to perform a vital task. The role of the IMB is to satisfy itself as to the treatment of prisoners including provision for their healthcare and other welfare while in prison, the facilities available to prisoners to allow them to make purposeful use of their time; and the cleanliness and adequacy of prison premises. This can make a huge difference to the lives of those held within these facilities.
